Maryland Waterfowl Season

Maryland's waterfowl season is fast approaching.  The Department of Natural Resources has issued this year's regular season, early teal season, bird limits, and regulations

The resident goose season is already underway in Frederick County.

The Monocacy River generally offers excellent late season hunting; however, early seasons tend to be hit or miss (no pun intended). My experience with the early resident goose season has been that the geese are mainly in the fields; however, geese sometimes sit on the river during midday and early afternoon.  Early season hunts tend to be better workouts than hunts; however, a little paddling practice is always good to get you ready for the main hunt.  Use the time to practice gun placement, shouldering, timing, and coordination so you'll be comfortable and ready when the main season hits......and who knows, with a little luck you may float up on a raft of geese around that next bend or behind a blown down tree.

  1. Paddled for resident goose this morning.....no luck, none on the river (at least the section I was on). There were, however, quite a few teals, a couple of mallards, lots of herons, about a dozen deer, a couple of muskrats, and a coon. Sort of my normal September hunt on the Monocacy.....geese are typically out in the fields...need some cold weather and ice :).
